The Americans presented the new generation Grand Cherokee SUV, which received a hybrid version for the first time.
Jeep unveiled the fifth generation Grand Cherokee SUV (WL index), which the company calls “the most technologically advanced, luxurious and off-road ready in the history of the model.”
The exterior of the new SUV was no secret: at the beginning of the year, Jeep released a seven-seater Grand Cherokee L, and now a shortened modification with two rows of seats has joined the family. The model with a five-seater saloon received the same narrow LED optics, but at the same time it differs from the L-version in reduced overhangs and a slightly different design of the rear part of the body.
The main technical change compared to the previous generation model was the appearance of a modification with a gasoline-electric power plant. It includes a 2.0-liter petrol four-cylinder turbocharged engine, operating in conjunction with a pair of electrical units: a belt-driven starter-generator with a capacity of 45 hp (53 Nm) and a 136 hp electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The total output of the hybrid installation was 381 hp. and 637 Nm of torque. The car is capable of driving exclusively on electric traction up to 40 km, and the total power reserve is 708 kilometers. The driver will be able to choose one of three driving modes: combined (Hybrid), petrol (eSave) and all-electric (Electric). Off-road driving is assisted by a plug-in all-wheel drive with a 2-band transfer case.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee has retained the classic gasoline internal combustion engines. We are talking about a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 Pentastar engine, developing 293 hp. and 352 Nm of torque. At the top of the line is a V8 unit with a working volume of 5.7 liters, producing 357 forces and 529 Newton meters.
The basic version of the model has rear-wheel drive, but for the Grand Cherokee modifications are provided with four drive wheels, a reduction gear and an electronic rear differential lock.
The model will also have the most off-road version with the traditional name Trailhawk with the standard Quadra-Lift adaptive air suspension capable of increasing ground clearance to 287 mm, as well as an off-road camera that scans the surface in front of and under the car. Plus, this Grand Cherokee has an openable anti-roll bar, which provides improved suspension articulation for large rocks and rough terrain.
As for the interior, there is a 10.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster inside, as well as a 10.1-inch touchscreen display of the infotainment complex. The list of available equipment includes additional multimedia displays for passengers, a 4G hotspot, Palermo leather trim and a 950-watt McIntosh stereo with 19 speakers.
The list of electronic “assistants” includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, all-round cameras, a night vision camera, a parking aid, a traffic sign recognition system, and an active lane keeping function.
North American sales of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee will begin before the end of 2021, and the SUV will reach Azerbaijan in the second quarter of 2022. A hybrid will also appear on our market, but it will not be available until early 2023.
